SAP HANA is an in-memory data platform that makes full use of the capabilities of current hardware to increase application performance and enable new scenarios and applications that were not possible before.
With the upcoming release of SAP NetWeaver 7.4 - currently planned for May 2013 - the integration of the
well-known reliable SAP NetWeaver platform with the powerful SAP HANA has reached the next level thus
combining the best of both worlds. This integration brings new opportunities for performance tuning, and
opens doors for business processes that were until now hard to realize due to existing restrictions of
classical database technology. Starting with this delivery, ABAP developers have several capabilities and
tools at their disposal, that allow them to easily exploit the strengths of the underlying SAP HANA within the
ABAP application logic and so make it easy to build state-of-the-art high performing and innovative business
applications optimized for SAP HANA.
SAP HANA brings new capabilities, but also enforces a new paradigm ‘code-2-data’ (code pushdown)
where data-intensive processing (e.g. costly calculation on large datasets) - which were until now handled in
the ABAP application layer - can be pushed down to the database layer. This directly results in less network
and back-end load, but also in the ease to use the power of SAP HANA sophistications (such as the
calculation engine). The following picture illustrates the paradigm shift that takes place with SAP HANA
compared to the traditional databases.
